From humble stone to sacred home — the people of Sliema built more than a church; they built a sanctuary of faith.

The Parish Church of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart in Sliema is a cornerstone of spiritual life and architectural beauty, with roots dating back to the late 19th century.

In 1872, a priest from Valletta, Fr. Pawl Vella D.D. had a holiday home in Sliema. He began to struggle to build a church on land that had been specially left by the Cathedral Chapter. The church began to be built in 1874 and was dedicated to Our Lady of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, today known as the church of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart. This church was opened and blessed on 26 June 1881, and on that same day, the statue of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart of Jesus was solemnly placed there. On 18 November 1881, the church was given over to the spiritual care of the Franciscan Friars Minor. It became a Parish in 1918 and was granted the title of Sanctuary on 29 September 2018 with the coronation of the statue of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
